Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging tools available today. It provides detailed images of organs, tissues, muscles, joints, and other structures within the body, helping doctors diagnose and monitor a wide range of medical conditions.
What Is an MRI?
An MRI scan uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create highly detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it a preferred imaging option for many conditions.
Why Might Your Doctor Request an MRI?
Your doctor may recommend an MRI to investigate:
- Joint and sports injuries
- Back and neck pain
- Brain and neurological conditions
- Spinal disorders
- Muscle and soft tissue injuries
- Certain abdominal and pelvic conditions
MRI scans can help provide accurate diagnoses, allowing your healthcare team to develop the most effective treatment plan.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Most MRI examinations require little preparation. However, because MRI uses a strong magnet, it is important to inform the imaging team if you have:
- A pacemaker or implanted medical device
- Metal implants or surgical clips
- Previous metal injuries
- Claustrophobia or anxiety about enclosed spaces
Our team will provide specific instructions before your appointment if any preparation is required.
What Happens During the Scan?
During the examination, you will lie comfortably on a scanning table that moves into the MRI machine. The scan is painless, although the machine may produce loud tapping or knocking sounds. Ear protection is provided, and our staff will remain in communication with you throughout the procedure.
Depending on the type of examination, most MRI scans take between 15 and 60 minutes.
Receiving Your Results
After your scan, a specialist radiologist will review the images and prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you and recommend any necessary next steps.
